Rasta … Spanish … King Kong …

Nicknames are normal on the Caribbean island of Grenada. Everyone has one. Often acquired in childhood, they may be funny, offensive or flattering, but they are never dull.

Find out more about Grenadian nicknames with “They Call Me …” the latest book from Shirley Anstis, author of “An A-Z for Your Life“. Born to Grenadian parents, Shirley has conducted extensive interviews across the island, and looks at a whole range of different nicknames. This beautifully illustrated book lets people tell their own story of how they got their nickname, and what it means to them. Shirley also investigates the cultural and social significance of nicknames on Grenada, looking at differences between the sexes and how nicknames are used by different groups on the island.

They Call Me…was launched at Grenada Heritage Day in London on 16th July 2011.  It is ideal for anyone who is interested in people and their stories, and sheds light on an aspect of Grenadian and Caribbean culture that is little known outside the islands.
